Curacao Dive Festival

09 November 2018

Curacao was without doubt the place to be last week. After months of planning, the first annual Curacao Dive Festival was kicked off, with the Scubalympics as opening event.

Through four different diving exercises, such as the 100 meter tired diver tow and the 100 meter lift bag, buddy teams showed who is boss and competed for the Golden Coconut. After this spectacular opening, several diving workshops took place throughout the rest of the week. For example, Atlantis Diving Curacao organized a Scubapro Equipment Clinic and an Equipment Try Out.

Furthermore, both local and tourist divers participated in a Coral Spawning Nightdive and a National Clean Up. Last but not least, there was a National Lionfish Hunt, during which 11 divers from Atlantis went up to 30 meters depth and shot over 10 of these devils. This made for a delicious BBQ the next day, which was also the closing event of this week full of dive festivities. Lionfish are a threat to both corals and fish in the Caribbean, so the lionfish caught were not only tasty, but also good for the environment.

During the closing ceremony, the winners of the underwater photography competition and lionfish hunt were announced. It was a week full of excitement and fun, with different types of dives for every type of diver. The first annual Curacao Dive Festival was a great success, and we look forward to seeing you next year for the second one!
